The Apple Silicon RAM context
Apple Silicon Macs use 'unified memory' — RAM is shared between CPU, GPU, Neural Engine. Different from PC: 16GB Mac RAM ≈ 20GB PC RAM in feel.
Soldered to the chip on Apple Silicon Macs. NO upgrade possible after purchase. Choose carefully.
Intel Macs (2019 and earlier): some have replaceable RAM — Mac mini, iMac. MacBook Pro 2016+ have soldered RAM, but Pro 2015 and earlier are upgradable.
8GB — only for very light users
Acceptable for: email + browsing + simple Office. Maximum 8–10 browser tabs simultaneously. No video editing. No development beyond simple HTML/CSS.
Pakistani real-world: 8GB feels okay first 3 months. Tight at 6 months. Frustrating at 1 year as apps + macOS grow more memory-hungry.
Buy 8GB only if: budget absolutely doesn't allow more + you genuinely won't multitask.
16GB — the safe minimum in 2026
Comfortable for: 25–30 browser tabs, Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop, light video editing (1080p), iOS development with simulator, Office + chat + cloud apps simultaneously.
Pakistani sweet spot for: students, freelancers, office workers, casual content creators.
PKR price premium over 8GB: typically PKR 25,000–35,000. Best money you'll spend on the configuration.
24GB — modest upgrade for specific workflows
Available on some M-series Air configs. Useful for: light pro video editing (1080p + heavier projects), 50+ browser tabs constantly, Docker development with multiple containers.
PKR premium over 16GB: PKR 25,000–35,000. Sometimes worth it for those edge cases.
32GB — pro creative + dev workflows
Required for: 4K video editing comfortable, large Photoshop composites, heavy Docker workflows, audio production with large plugin libraries.
Pakistani professional sweet spot: freelance video editors, architects (Parallels + Revit), audio engineers.
PKR premium over 16GB: PKR 50,000–80,000 typically.
48GB / 64GB — heavy pro tools
Required for: 4K colour grading in DaVinci, 8K editing, large 3D scenes in Cinema 4D, ML model inference, very heavy Logic Pro sessions.
Reserved for serious pros who'll use the headroom daily. Most users never need it.
96GB / 128GB — specialised pro use
Required for: ML researchers running local LLMs, 8K colour grading + multi-stream playback, very large Cinema 4D scenes.
Most Pakistani users will never benefit from 96GB+. Don't pay for it unless you have a confirmed workflow that demands it.
Decision framework — quick recipe
Student / freelance writer / customer service / VA: 16GB.
Graphic designer / web developer / photographer (Lightroom): 16GB minimum, 24GB ideal.
Video editor / iOS developer / audio producer: 32GB minimum.
ML researcher / 4K colourist / 3D artist: 48GB+ minimum.
Future-proofing in 2026
macOS memory pressure has grown ~20% per major version. 16GB today acts like 12GB did three years ago.
If you'll keep the Mac 5+ years: bump up one tier from current need. 8GB-fit users → 16GB. 16GB-fit users → 24GB. Justifies cost across ownership life.
