Step 1: Back up everything
Time Machine to external drive (most reliable). Or iCloud Drive sync — verify all important folders synced before erasing. Take screenshots of key settings (display, keyboard, accessibility) so you can replicate on new Mac.
Verify backup: open the backup, open a few random files, confirm they work. Don't trust a backup you haven't verified.
Step 2: Sign out of services (CRITICAL)
System Settings → Apple ID → Sign Out. This removes your account from the device and disables Activation Lock. Without this step, the next user cannot use the Mac.
Also sign out of: iMessage, iCloud, App Store separately if Apple ID sign-out didn't catch them. Sign out of any third-party accounts (Google, Microsoft, Slack, etc.).
Step 3: Disable Find My Mac and FileVault
System Settings → Privacy & Security → FileVault → Turn Off. This may take 30–60 minutes to decrypt the drive — start before other steps.
System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Find My Mac → Off. This removes the Activation Lock specifically.
Step 4: Factory reset
macOS Ventura+: System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. This is the easiest path on Apple Silicon Macs.
macOS Monterey or older / Intel Macs: Apple menu → Restart, hold Cmd+R, Disk Utility → erase Macintosh HD, then Reinstall macOS.
Step 5: Physical preparation
Wipe exterior with slightly damp microfiber cloth. Clean keyboard with compressed air. Wipe screen with water + microfiber. Don't use polish or anything that adds shine — it looks suspicious.
Gather accessories: original charger (USB-C or MagSafe). Original box if you have it (adds PKR 3–5k to trade-in value).
Step 6: Bring documents
Original purchase receipt (boosts trade-in value 5–10%). Any AppleCare or warranty paperwork. List of any repairs done at AppleForce (we'll have this on file).
