Price comparison (M4 / M3 generation, 2026)
Mac mini M4 base (16/256GB) imported is the cheapest, MacBook Air M3 base (16/256GB) is mid, and MacBook Pro 14" M4 base is the most expensive.
Mac mini gives you M4 silicon at the price of a 4-year-old used MacBook Pro. The catch: you supply your own monitor, keyboard, mouse, and you can't take it anywhere.
Total cost of ownership · desk setup math
Mac mini + 27" 4K monitor + Magic Keyboard + Magic Mouse comes out about the same as a base MacBook Air — but with a better screen and more screen real estate.
If you already have a monitor + keyboard + mouse: Mac mini wins on cost-per-performance by a wide margin.
Performance differences
Identical CPU/GPU silicon at the same chip tier. The desktop chassis gives Mac mini sustained performance Macs Air can't match · no thermal throttling on long renders.
MacBook Pro 14"+ has active cooling like Mac mini so the sustained-performance gap is smaller.
When Mac mini wins
Desk-based work that doesn't need portability. You already own a monitor + peripherals. Need to drive 2-3 displays simultaneously (Mac mini supports more native external displays than Air). Want maximum bang-per-rupee on macOS.
When MacBook wins
Student / freelancer with no fixed desk. Frequent travel or coffee-shop work. Need built-in screen, keyboard, trackpad, camera. Want one device that does everything.
