What pro colour work demands
Colour accuracy: Delta E < 2 across colour space. Higher = colours shift visibly from reference.
Wide colour gamut: P3 minimum (98%+ coverage). Rec.2020 for HDR work.
True 10-bit display: smooth gradients. 8-bit displays show banding in colour grading.
Hardware calibration support: monitor can store calibration in LUT internally.
Pakistani context: most local productions deliver Rec.709 (HD broadcast). Some Netflix Pakistan productions need P3/HDR.
Entry pro tier (PKR 110,000–200,000)
BenQ PD2725U 27" 4K: PKR 165,000. Hardware calibration via Palette Master Element. Pantone validated. Good P3 coverage.
Dell U2723QE 27" 4K: PKR 105,000–125,000. Software calibration only but good colour out of box.
Apple Studio Display: PKR 230,000–260,000. P3 wide colour, automatic colour management. Lacks hardware calibration but excellent for non-professional reference monitor use.
Mid pro tier (PKR 220,000–450,000)
EIZO ColorEdge CS2740 27" 4K: PKR 350,000–420,000. Hardware calibration. Industry-grade. Used by Hollywood houses.
Asus ProArt PA32UCX 32" 4K mini-LED: PKR 425,000–500,000. HDR1000 certified. Hardware calibration. Powerful HDR work.
Reference monitor tier (PKR 1,000,000+)
Apple Pro Display XDR 32" 6K: PKR 1,250,000–1,400,000. Pro Stand sold separately (PKR 175,000).
EIZO ColorEdge CG319X 31" 4K: PKR 1,500,000+. Built-in calibration sensor + hood.
Sony BVM-HX310 30" 4K HDR reference: PKR 4,000,000+. True broadcast reference. Most Pakistani facilities can't justify this — Indian dubbing studios occasionally have.
Calibration tools required
X-Rite i1Display Studio: PKR 35,000. Entry-level, fine for most work.
X-Rite i1Display Pro: PKR 55,000. Better sensor, pro-grade.
Calibrite Display Plus HL: PKR 65,000. Latest gen, recommended for new buys.
Calibration software: bundled with hardware. Or DisplayCAL (free, advanced).
MacBook Pro internal display for grading
MacBook Pro 14"/16" miniLED ProMotion: excellent for reference. P3 wide colour, HDR1600 highlights, factory-calibrated.
Suitable for: rough colour grading, social content, final pass on small productions.
Not suitable for: final delivery quality control on broadcast / cinema. Use external reference for those.
Calibration workflow recommendation
Buy hardware-calibration-capable monitor (BenQ PD or EIZO CS at minimum).
Calibrate monthly for serious pro work.
Match calibration to delivery target: Rec.709 for broadcast, P3 for Apple HDR, Rec.2020 for HDR cinema.
Reference comparison: keep one trusted reference clip — same clip across calibrations confirms accuracy.
