What 'display lottery' looks like
Open lid: sometimes screen is dim. Sometimes flickers. Sometimes coloured tint. Sometimes works perfectly.
Behavior changes depending on lid angle, recently sleep/wake, ambient temperature.
Hours of normal use, then suddenly the next lid-open gives a faulty display state.
Common on 2016–2019 MacBook Pros, especially after 4+ years of use.
Root cause: display cable wear (flexgate stage 1)
Each lid open/close flexes the display cable that runs from logic board through the hinge to the screen.
After 20,000–50,000 flex cycles (typical 4–6 years use), cable insulation cracks. Some traces work, some don't, depending on physical position.
Why 'lottery': the angle of the lid changes which specific traces are conducting. Different positions → different displayed faults.
Diagnostic confirmation
Test: slowly tilt lid through angles. If symptoms change predictably with angle = flexgate cable issue. If random regardless of angle = different problem (panel itself or GPU).
Connect external monitor. If external is clean = display assembly issue (cable or panel). If external is also affected = GPU/board issue.
Fix 1: Display cable replacement
Apple offered free repair until 2023 for affected serial ranges. Now out of programme.
AppleForce cable replacement: PKR 18,000–28,000 fitted depending on model. 1–2 day workshop time.
Lasts 4–6+ more years before potential recurrence — modern replacement cables are typically more robust.
Fix 2: Full display assembly replacement
If cable is integrated to panel (some 2018+ Pro models), needs full display assembly swap.
AppleForce: PKR 55,000–110,000 depending on model. 1–3 day turnaround.
More expensive but guaranteed fix.
Models specifically affected (Apple's repair programme list + AppleForce experience)
MacBook Pro 13" 2016 (A1706, A1708) — high rate.
MacBook Pro 15" 2016 (A1707) — moderate rate.
MacBook Pro 13" 2017–2018 (A1708, A1989) — moderate.
MacBook Pro 15" 2017–2018 (A1707, A1990) — moderate.
MacBook Pro 13"/15" 2019: better cable design, lower rate but still occurs.
MacBook Pro 14"/16" (2021+ Apple Silicon): redesigned, very low rate.
Workaround while waiting for repair
External monitor for desk use. Reduces lid-flex cycles.
Avoid laptop-on-bed slouching — different lid angle each time accelerates wear.
Don't close + reopen frequently. Use sleep/wake without closing the lid when at desk.
