Step 1: Apple ID — get it right early
If you don't have an Apple ID: create one with your real name + Pakistani phone number. Don't use 'sample@email.com' — this becomes your identity across all Apple services.
Region: choose Pakistan if buying mostly local apps. Some users choose US for wider app selection (requires US payment method, complicates Apple ID).
Strong password: 12+ characters with mixed case, numbers, symbols. Use a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, Apple Passwords) — you'll need it.
Step 2: Two-factor authentication (TFA)
Mandatory in 2026. Add your phone number for SMS codes. Add a trusted device (your iPhone if you have one) for push notifications.
Backup recovery codes: store securely (not on the same Mac). Lock yourself out of Apple ID = days of recovery process.
Step 3: iCloud what to enable and what to skip
Enable: Find My Mac (essential for theft recovery), iCloud Drive (sync files), Photos (auto-backup).
Consider carefully: iCloud Mail (most use Gmail), iCloud Keychain (good but use 1Password if you prefer), Health (irrelevant for Mac).
iCloud+ storage: free 5GB is too small. PKR 290/month for 50GB is the cheapest useful tier. PKR 990/month for 200GB is the family tier.
Step 4: System Settings essentials
Display: enable True Tone (warmer light reduces eye strain). Night Shift after sunset.
Battery: enable Optimised Battery Charging (prolongs cell life).
Touch ID: enroll 2 fingers (often the index of each hand).
Privacy: review which apps have which permissions. Be stingy with Location, Camera, Microphone permissions.
Step 5: Pakistan-specific regional settings
Region: Pakistan (for date format dd/mm/yyyy + PKR currency).
Time zone: Asia/Karachi (Pakistan Standard Time).
Date & Time: set to auto from network.
Languages: English (Pakistan) or English (UK). Add Urdu if you'll type Urdu — System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → add Urdu.
Step 6: Essential first apps
Browser: Safari is excellent and battery-friendly. Chrome if you need Google ecosystem integration. Arc Browser for power users.
Office: Microsoft Office 365 (PKR 1,200/month) or free Apple iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote).
Communication: WhatsApp Desktop, Slack, Zoom — all native macOS apps.
Password manager: 1Password (paid), Bitwarden (free), or built-in Apple Passwords.
Cloud storage: iCloud + (optionally) Google Drive or Dropbox.
Step 7: Backup setup (most-skipped, most-important)
Time Machine: connect any external drive (PKR 8k–15k for 1TB). System Settings → Time Machine → Add Backup Disk.
iCloud Drive: enable on important folders (Documents, Desktop).
Off-site option: Backblaze (~PKR 700/month unlimited) for full computer backup.
Without backup: data loss is 100% your problem when Mac fails.
