Upgrade path: 16GB if you keep 15+ tabs constantly. Air M2 16/256GB used is PKR 195k–225k.
Graphic designers (PKR 220k–380k)
Used MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro 16/512GB. Adobe Illustrator + Photoshop + Figma + 30+ tabs. P3 colour gamut for accurate colour work. External monitor recommended.
Budget alternative: MacBook Air M3 16/512GB new. Lighter but no active cooling — sustained rendering will thermal-throttle. Air is fine for most freelance design.
Video editors & motion graphics (PKR 400k–700k)
MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro / M2 Pro 16–32GB. Premiere Pro / Final Cut Pro / DaVinci Resolve. ProRes hardware acceleration native.
1080p editing: 16GB enough. 4K timelines: 32GB for comfort. 4K + heavy effects: M-Pro or M-Max chip tier.
Web developers (PKR 200k–400k)
Used MacBook Air M1/M2 16/256GB. VS Code + 8 tabs + Node dev server + Docker (light) all comfortable. macOS Unix-y enough for full dev.
Heavy dev (multiple Docker containers + databases): Pro 14" M1 Pro 16GB. Active cooling matters for sustained Docker work.
Mobile/iOS developers (PKR 280k–450k)
Mac is required for iOS development. Used Pro 13" M2 16/512GB or Pro 14" M1 Pro 16GB. Xcode + simulators is memory-intensive.
iOS dev pays: typical Pakistani iOS dev rate $25–60/hour. Mac investment pays back in 1–2 weeks of project work.
Translators, transcribers, voice-over (PKR 150k–220k)
Used MacBook Air M1 8/256GB. Light office work + voice recording. Audacity, GarageBand, Loom for video.
Voice-over: built-in mic acceptable for basic work. Pro recording: invest PKR 25k in USB mic (Audio-Technica AT2020, RØDE NT-USB+).
Common mistake: under-budgeting RAM
8GB feels fine on day 1 but tight after 6 months of Chrome tabs + apps accumulation. 16GB is the safe 'won't regret it' minimum.
Storage: 256GB is bare minimum. Cloud-heavy users can survive on 256GB. Project-heavy freelancers (video, design): 512GB+.
