Quick spec overview
MacBook Pro 15" 2019 (A1990): Intel 8-core i9 9th gen, Radeon Pro 555X/560X/Vega 20 GPU, 16-32GB RAM, 256GB-4TB SSD, Touch Bar + Touch ID.
Last Intel-only 15" Pro before Apple Silicon transition. Powerful but power-hungry and runs hot.
Issue 1: Butterfly keyboard · sticky/dead keys
Third-generation butterfly keyboard. Apple's Keyboard Service Programme covered this until 2023. Now out of free repair window.
Symptoms: keys not registering, registering twice, sticky travel. Affects 15-25% of 2019 units long-term.
Fix: top-case replacement (keyboard + battery + trackpad as a unit) at AppleForce · WhatsApp 0312-4690005 for a repair quote.
Issue 2: GPU failure (Radeon Pro models)
Radeon GPUs in 15" Pro tend to develop solder-joint issues after 3-5 years. Symptoms: random reboots, GPU-intensive crashes, vertical lines on screen.
Apple ran a recall programme for some serial ranges (2019 i9 specifically). Now ended.
Fix: GPU reflow at AppleForce (temporary, lasts 6-18 months) or full GPU replacement (more permanent). WhatsApp 0312-4690005 for a quote on either.
Issue 3: Thermal throttling · i9 overheats
i9 + small thermal envelope = sustained workloads thermal-throttle to 2.0 GHz. Symptoms: kernel panics under heavy load, fans at 100% constantly.
Mitigation: thermal paste replacement (low-cost service), undervolt via VoltageShift (free but technical).
Issue 4: Flexgate · display cable wear
Display cable wears through after repeated lid open/close cycles. Stage 1: backlight uneven at bottom. Stage 2: backlight cuts off when opened past 45 degrees.
Apple Repair Programme covered until 2023. Out of free fix.
Fix: display cable replacement · sometimes a full display assembly is needed. WhatsApp 0312-4690005 for a quote.
Issue 5: Battery degradation + swelling
i9 power draw is hard on the battery. By year 5, expect 80% health max. After 6 years, swelling becomes common.
Visible signs: trackpad raised, lid won't close flush, keys hard to press. Stop using immediately · swollen lithium is a fire risk.
Fix: battery replacement · includes battery only, not full top-case.
Should you buy A1990 used in 2026?
Even at a bargain price for a working unit: tempting but high risk. macOS dropped support already (Sonoma last supported version, Tahoe excluded). Active issues likely.
Better value: used MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro (A2442). Apple Silicon, full macOS support, far more reliable.
