Quick spec recap
MacBook Pro 16" 2021 A2485: M1 Pro (8 or 10-core CPU) or M1 Max (10-core CPU). 16GB–64GB unified memory. 512GB–8TB SSD. MagSafe 3 + 3× Thunderbolt 4 + HDMI + SD card. ProMotion 120Hz miniLED display.
Released October 2021. Marked Apple's return to ports + MagSafe. Excellent build quality.
Issue 1: Speaker buzz on certain frequencies
Some users report buzz around 800-1500 Hz on the high-fidelity 6-speaker system. Sounds like a panel resonance, not the speakers themselves.
Apple addressed via firmware updates for most cases. Some persistent.
Fix: software update first. Physical fix requires speaker assembly check (PKR 8k–18k labour) — rare actual hardware issue.
Issue 2: Battery health drop on heavy users
Heavy creative pros report battery health at 85–88% after 3 years. Lighter users at 92–95% after same period.
Apple's accepted minimum is 80% before service eligibility. Most A2485s won't hit that until 5–6 years.
Fix: battery replacement PKR 35k–45k. Includes top-case (Pro 16" has integrated battery + top-case).
Issue 3: ProMotion 120Hz flicker (rare)
Some early-batch A2485 units flicker when ProMotion changes refresh rate dynamically.
Fix: macOS update (resolved in most versions). Persistent: System Settings → Displays → set ProMotion to fixed 60Hz as workaround.
Issue 4: USB-C port wear on heavy users
3× Thunderbolt ports get heavy use. After 4+ years, some show port wear (cable doesn't seat as firmly).
Fix: port assembly replacement. AppleForce: PKR 18k–28k per port assembly.
Issue 5: HDMI port reliability
Built-in HDMI port works reliably for most. Some reports of HDMI 2.1 not driving 8K displays despite spec — usually a cable/display compatibility issue, not the port.
Diagnostic: test with confirmed HDMI 2.1 cable + known-good 4K/8K display. If works on Mac mini but not Pro 16": port may be defective. PKR 12k–22k for port replacement.
2026 verdict on A2485
Highly reliable overall — most A2485s in 2026 are working perfectly. Maintain through normal use, expect 6–7+ years productive life.
Trade-in to M3 Pro / M4 Pro: justified only for video editors needing latest performance. Most users should hold A2485.
