Pre-storage checklist
Charge battery to 50% (not 100% — full charge ages cells faster in storage). Shut down (not sleep). Detach all cables and accessories. Eject any SD card or external drive.
Run Disk Utility → First Aid to verify drive is clean. Time Machine backup before storage so any post-storage failure is recoverable.
Battery preservation during long storage
Lithium cells discharge slowly even when Mac is off — about 5% per month. Below 20% charge, batteries enter deep discharge which damages cell chemistry permanently.
For storage longer than 3 months: power up every 2–3 months, let charge complete to 50%, shut down. This single habit prevents 90% of post-storage battery failures.
Pakistan climate considerations
Monsoon (June–September): humidity reaches 80%+. Store Mac with silica gel packets in a sealed container (zip-lock with rice or silica). Mould inside the Mac is a real risk.
Winter (December–February): cold isn't a major issue for Lahore/Karachi, but in Murree/Skardu cold storage can crystallise battery electrolyte. Keep in heated rooms.
Dust: Pakistani indoor dust is fine and conductive. Store Mac in original box or cloth bag — never on open shelves.
Storage environment ideal specs
Temperature: 10–25°C (50–77°F). Humidity: 30–50% RH. No direct sunlight. No vibration. Off the floor (flood risk in basement storage).
When you take it out of storage
Acclimatise to room temperature for 2 hours before powering on (especially if storage was cooler). Visually inspect for any moisture or pest signs. First boot — check battery health and run hardware test (hold D during startup).
