Step 1 — Wait 30 minutes the first time
On macOS updates the progress bar often appears frozen but is actually still working. Especially after Sonoma → Sequoia → Tahoe upgrades, a 'stuck' bar can take 45 minutes to finish on older Macs. Don't power-cycle inside the first 30 minutes after an update.
After 30 minutes with zero progress, move to Step 2.
Step 2 — Force shutdown + Safe Mode
Hold the power button for 10 seconds. Release. Wait 5 seconds. On Intel: hold Shift while pressing power. On Apple Silicon: hold power until 'Loading startup options' appears, choose your disk, then hold Shift before clicking Continue.
Safe Mode disables third-party kernel extensions and login items. If your Mac boots cleanly in Safe Mode, the cause is a third-party app or driver — uninstall recent additions one by one until you find the culprit.
Step 3 — Recovery Mode and Disk Utility
If Safe Mode also hangs, boot into Recovery: Intel — hold Command + R while powering on. Apple Silicon — hold power until 'Loading startup options', click Options, click Continue.
From Recovery, click Disk Utility. Select your main volume (usually 'Macintosh HD'). Click First Aid → Run. If errors are found, First Aid will repair them. This fixes a surprising number of 'stuck on logo' issues without reinstalling anything.
Step 4 — Reinstall macOS without losing data
Back in the Recovery main menu, click 'Reinstall macOS'. This downloads a fresh copy of macOS and installs it on top of your existing data — your files, apps and settings are preserved. Allow 30–90 minutes depending on internet speed.
This fixes corruption in the OS layer while leaving your user data alone. If you're worried about data first, attach an external drive and clone the disk via Disk Utility before reinstalling.
Step 5 — When to bring it in
If Recovery Mode itself won't load — you stay stuck on the Apple logo with progress bar — the problem is hardware: SSD failure, T2 chip lockout (2018–2020), or a board fault. None of these are home-fixable but all are workshop-fixable.
