Apple logo with loading bar that never finishes? Here's the fix order from quick to advanced.

What 'stuck on loading bar' means

Mac shows Apple logo + progress bar that stops moving or moves extremely slowly. Hours pass without progress.

Indicates macOS boot process can't complete. Common after: interrupted update, sudden power loss, SSD issues.

Step 1: Wait — sometimes it really is slow

Major macOS updates: first boot after update can legitimately take 1–2 hours on older Macs. Don't interrupt during the first hour.

After update: status seems frozen but kernel is working. CPU activity behind the scenes.

Step 2: Force restart and try again

Hold power button 10 seconds to force off. Wait 10 seconds. Power on.

Sometimes clears a stuck boot phase. 30% of cases boot normally on second try.

Step 3: Boot in Safe Mode

Apple Silicon: power off → hold power button until 'Loading startup options' appears → select disk → hold Shift → 'Continue in Safe Mode.'

Intel: power off → power on while holding Shift → release when login appears.

Safe Mode disables third-party kernel extensions and runs disk checks. If it boots: identify third-party software causing issues.

Step 4: Boot to Recovery + Disk Utility

Apple Silicon: power off → hold power button → Options → Continue.

Intel: power off → power on holding Cmd+R.

In Recovery → Disk Utility → select Macintosh HD → First Aid → Run.

Fixes file-system errors that prevent normal boot.

    Step 5: Reinstall macOS (data-preserving)

Recovery → Reinstall macOS → choose Macintosh HD.

Preserves all user data — replaces system files only. Takes 30–90 min depending on internet.

    Fixes most software-cause boot failures.

Step 6: Erase + reinstall (data loss)

Only if you have backup or accept data loss.

Recovery → Disk Utility → Erase Macintosh HD → APFS format. Then Reinstall macOS.

Clean state. Restore from Time Machine after fresh install.

Step 7: DFU restore (when Recovery fails)

Apple Silicon Mac: if even Recovery doesn't boot, needs DFU restore via Apple Configurator on a second Mac.

    Workshop service: PKR 12k–18k. Includes donor-Mac + USB-C cable + Configurator setup.

    When it's hardware

DFU restore fails repeatedly = SSD failed (cannot be written), or T2/M-chip firmware corrupt.

Workshop board diagnosis. SSD chip replacement PKR 35k–55k. Logic board replacement PKR 100k+.

At hardware-failure cost levels, trade-in often makes more sense.
