Which Macs have T2 chips
iMac Pro 2017 — first Mac with T2. MacBook Pro 2018, 2019, 2020 (Intel). MacBook Air 2018, 2019, 2020 (Intel). Mac mini 2018. iMac 2020 (Intel). Mac Pro 2019.
Apple Silicon Macs (M1+) integrate T2 functionality into the M-chip — no separate T2 to fail.
What T2 actually does
Secure Enclave (Touch ID, encryption keys). Audio controller (mic/speaker processing). SSD controller (encryption + speed). Camera image processor. System Management. Boot security (signed boot).
When T2 has issues, any of these can break in confusing ways.
Common T2 symptom: audio glitches
Audio cuts out randomly mid-playback. Speakers crackle even at low volume. Mic stops working in middle of call.
Quick fix: reset T2-controlled audio service. Open Terminal → 'sudo killall coreaudiod' → password → audio restarts.
Persistent: T2 may need firmware re-flash. Workshop service.
Common T2 symptom: SSD missing / unbootable
Mac boots to a question mark folder. Or boots to 'Recovery' but can't find a disk to install on.
Cause: T2 lost its handshake with the soldered SSD chips. Sometimes from interrupted firmware update or impact.
Fix: DFU restore via another Mac + Apple Configurator 2. AppleForce performs this — PKR 12k–18k labour. Sometimes data is recoverable, sometimes not depending on encryption state.
Common T2 symptom: Touch ID stops working
Touch ID prompts users to enter passcode, then refuses fingerprint enrolment.
Cause: T2 lost pairing with the Touch ID sensor. Often after a third-party top-case replacement (where pairing wasn't restored properly).
Fix: Apple Configurator pairing rerun. AppleForce service includes this with any top-case work.
T2 firmware corruption — full DFU restore
Sometimes T2 firmware itself is corrupt. Symptoms: Mac won't boot beyond Apple logo, can't enter Recovery, won't connect to network.
Process: Mac put into DFU mode (specific key combo) + connect to another Mac running Apple Configurator 2 + restore T2 firmware.
Workshop service: PKR 12k–22k including diagnostic time. Most successful in 80%+ of cases.
When T2 is genuinely failed
Firmware restore fails repeatedly = T2 chip itself is faulty. Replacement requires logic-board-level chip rework or full logic board swap.
Chip rework: PKR 45k–75k. Full board swap: PKR 80k–150k depending on model. At this cost, trade-in usually better than fixing.
