Upfront cost comparison
Mid-range Windows laptop (HP/Dell/Lenovo, i5 + 8GB + 256GB): PKR 130,000–180,000 new. Used MacBook Air M1: PKR 145,000–180,000. New MacBook Air M3: PKR 285,000–320,000.
For most undergrads, used M1 Air = same money as new mid-Windows but with M1 silicon (still outperforms i5 11th gen in real-world tasks).
Battery life — campus reality
Windows laptop in a backpack: 4–6 hours real-world (manufacturers claim 8–10). MacBook Air M1: 12–16 hours real-world. You can leave the charger in your hostel room.
For students with 3–5 hours between hostel and class, battery anxiety is real. M-series Macs solve it.
Resale value after 4 years
Used Windows laptop after 4 years: typically 25–35% of original price. Used MacBook after 4 years: 50–60% of original price.
Net 4-year cost: PKR 150k Windows → resell for PKR 40k = PKR 110k actual. PKR 180k Mac → resell for PKR 100k = PKR 80k actual. Mac is cheaper over the lifetime.
Software compatibility for Pakistani students
MS Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, AutoCAD, MATLAB, SPSS, programming IDEs (VS Code, IntelliJ): all work natively on macOS. Almost no university-required software is Windows-only in 2026.
Exceptions: some engineering programmes that require legacy Windows-only CAD packages. Check with your department before buying a Mac.
Recommended student picks (Pakistan, 2026)
Tight budget (under PKR 150k): used MacBook Air M1 8/256GB. The 'good enough for most things forever' Mac.
Mid budget (PKR 200k–280k): used MacBook Air M2 16/512GB. Future-proofs against software demands through your degree.
Premium (PKR 320k+): new MacBook Air M3 or used MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro. Pro Air is for design/CS students who'll do real work.
