The Apple Silicon virtualisation landscape
Boot Camp (full Windows install): Intel Macs only. Apple Silicon: not supported.
Apple Silicon options: Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion (Pro version free for personal), UTM (open-source, free).
All three run Windows 11 ARM (the ARM version of Windows). Windows ARM emulates x86 software for most apps — performance varies.
Parallels Desktop (PKR 28,000/year + Windows licence)
Pros: best macOS integration. Coherence mode runs Windows apps in macOS-style windows. Easy setup wizard. Excellent performance.
Cons: subscription model. Some Pakistani users uncomfortable with annual subscriptions.
Best for: business users who need Windows daily. Polish + support justifies cost.
VMware Fusion (free Personal use 2024+, paid for commercial)
Pros: free for personal use. Excellent performance. Powerful enterprise features (snapshots, cloning).
Cons: less polished macOS integration than Parallels. Setup more technical.
Best for: power users who want free + capable virtualisation. Personal use only without paying — commercial use requires VMware Fusion Pro licence (~PKR 35,000).
UTM (free, open-source)
Pros: 100% free. Open-source. Active community. Supports multiple OS including Linux variants.
Cons: rougher edges. Performance often 20–30% slower than Parallels/VMware. Setup requires more technical skill.
Best for: tinkerers, students, anyone OK with rough edges in exchange for zero cost.
Performance comparison (Pakistani user perspective)
CPU-bound work: Parallels ≈ VMware > UTM (15–25% slower).
Disk I/O: Parallels best, VMware close second, UTM noticeably slower.
Graphics: Parallels best for light games + 3D. UTM/VMware acceptable for office work but choppy for games.
Memory overhead: UTM lightest, Parallels heaviest.
Which to choose for common Pakistani workflows
Run Pakistani banking software (Inter Bank Funds Transfer, FBR IRIS desktop): Parallels. Reliable + supports printer/serial port pass-through.
Occasional Windows-only app (PESDA tax software, legacy government portals): UTM. Free is the right price.
Pro Windows development (Visual Studio with Windows-side debugging): VMware Fusion (Personal use free).
Office worker who needs Word/Excel with macros only available in Windows Office: any of three. Cheapest = UTM.
Windows licence — separate consideration
Windows 11 ARM licence: PKR 22,000 (Home), PKR 35,000 (Pro) from Microsoft Pakistan official.
Some Pakistani users use Windows trial mode indefinitely (limited features, watermark). Not recommended for professional use.
OEM keys from grey market: PKR 800–2,500 but legality questionable. Activation can fail later.
