What 'refurbished' should mean
Properly refurbished: tested by a technician, faulty parts replaced, battery health verified above 85%, exterior cleaned/polished, fresh macOS install. Sold with 30–90 day warranty minimum. Comes with a refurbishment report.
Apple's own 'Apple Certified Refurbished' programme replaces battery + outer shell on every unit and includes 1-year warranty. Not sold in Pakistan, but eBay/MacOfAllTrades imports do reach here.
What 'used' should mean
Original-owner Mac sold as-is. No mandatory testing or part replacement. Battery could be at any cycle count. May or may not include warranty depending on seller. Price typically 10–20% below refurbished for same model.
On OLX and Daraz, 'used' is the default — sometimes with a vague '6-month warranty' that vanishes if the seller is unreachable.
Price comparison (M1 Air 8/256GB as example)
Apple Certified Refurbished (imported): PKR 195,000–215,000. AppleForce refurbished (locally tested): PKR 175,000–195,000. OLX private used: PKR 145,000–170,000.
The PKR 20–40k premium for refurbished buys you: battery health guarantee, hardware diagnostic report, written warranty, return policy.
Verification checklist before buying
Battery: check 'Battery Health' in System Settings → Battery. Should be 85%+ for refurbished, 75%+ for used. Cycle count under 500 ideally.
Activation Lock: must be off — confirm by checking 'Find My' isn't showing previous owner's name. Run apple.com/check-coverage with the serial.
Storage health: open Disk Utility → First Aid. Should pass with no errors.
Display: full-white screen test for dead pixels, full-black for backlight bleeding, full-grey for uniformity.
