The headline money difference
Typical example — used MacBook Air M1 8/256GB in good condition. AppleForce trade-in offer: PKR 130,000–145,000 cash or PKR 145,000–160,000 as upgrade credit.
OLX private sale (realistic): listed at PKR 170,000, after 3 weeks of haggling sells for PKR 155,000–165,000. Net advantage of private sale: PKR 10,000–25,000.
The time-cost reality
Private sale time investment: 8–15 hours over 2–4 weeks (listing photos, replying to messages, demo meetings, haggling, no-shows, multiple buyer rounds).
Trade-in time investment: 30 minutes total (online quote, drop-off, payment). Difference: 10+ hours.
Effective hourly value of private sale premium: PKR 1,500–2,500/hour. If your time is worth more, trade-in is mathematically better.
Risks in private sale
Fake currency (still common in cash-heavy Lahore deals). Buyer no-show after agreed price. Buyer asking for trial period (which becomes 'sorry doesn't work' return). Identity theft from sharing personal contact widely.
Mitigations: meet in bank lobby, use real-time bank transfer with confirmation before handover, never agree to 'trial' periods.
Tax implications (most Pakistanis don't worry — here's when you should)
Personal-use MacBook sale: no tax in Pakistan. Selling your own laptop = personal asset disposal.
Frequent reselling (3+ Macs per year): FBR may classify as business activity → income tax on profit margin. Most freelancers and students never hit this.
Trade-in: zero tax exposure — treated as personal asset disposal regardless of frequency.
When private sale clearly wins
You have a rare/high-spec Mac (Pro 16" M3 Max, Pro 14" M1 Max 64GB) — trade-in values these conservatively because resale uncertainty. Private sale to a serious editor/dev can be PKR 50–100k more.
You're not in a hurry. You enjoy the OLX/Facebook Marketplace process. You have time and don't need cash this week.
When trade-in clearly wins
Common Mac (M1 Air, M1 Pro 13"). You need the cash/credit fast. You're upgrading to another Mac (trade-in credit beats cash). You value time and certainty.
